Constructions Steps Drag Construction
1. Take two straws and place them on the newspaper in a cross or in 90 degree angles.
2. Use a ruler and pencil to outline a perfect square using the straws as a guide to its length. 3. Then cut out the square from the newspaper (about I4.5cm in length).
4. In the middle of one of the straws slice it open with an X-acto blade so that the other
straw may slide through it. Slide the other straw through until it is halfway through. (It will look like a cross or x.)
5. Take the extra newspaper and cut two Icm x 10cm stripes.
6. Then place the straws on the newspaper and glue them there.
7. Directly next to the straw (at the center of the newspaper or 5mm apart) poke two small holes across from each other (As shown in Figure A).
8. Then take the string and tie it around the straws on the drag system.
9. With X-acto, next to straws on the four areas the straws create slice the newspaper open to allow two 1 cm wide stripes of newspaper to loop through.
10. Then take the stripes of newspaper and loop them around the straws and through the ;~
opening. (Leave the ends of the newspaper alone for now.)
11. Take the four toothpicks and place them in the four areas so that they touch the straws.
Glue them in the mini square shape.
12. Take the last straw and put the string (that is attached to the drag system) through the straw (As shown in figure B).
13. Thread the string through the holes and tie it around the straw cross.
14. Glue the Icm newspaper stripes to the straw (As shown in figure B). Egg Construction
1. Take the tagboard and poke two small holes in the sides of the tagboard with a pin (about 0.3cm from the tagboard's edges).
2. Take the paper clip and unwind it into a straight line.
3. Then take the paper clip and place each end of the paper clip through the holes in the
tagboard and bend over and glue in place. (This is to attach the string to later as shown in figure C).
4. Place the four cotton balls in a tight square configuration on the bottom of the fatter end of the egg.
5. Wrap the tissue around the egg, and cotton balls. Then pace inside the arch of wire (paper clip).
6. Attach the string that goes through the straw (from the drag system) to the paper clip arch.
7. Tape around the tissue, paper clip, egg, and cotton balls but not around the tagboard (As shown in figure C).
8. Glue tissue to tagboard and loop with moderate amounts of glue.
9. Take the extra newspaper, cut and glue it into 50 cylinders Icm x IOcm .
10. Then glue the cylinders to the tagboard in two layers with a sheet of news paper between them (As shown in figure C).
Explanation of Key Concepts on the Design
1. The drag system is to slow the impact to the egg and keep the unit falling straight. 2. The cylinder springs are to absorb the impact even more. 3. The cotton provides primary padding.
