The Task
EPV Design Challenge
The Task:
Design, build and test an Egg Protection Vehicle (EPV) from the kit of materials. The EPV is to protect one grade A egg in at least one free fall trip from an elevation of 1 meter to the class-room floor. Additional drops from release points as high as the ceiling will further characterize each functional EPV’s capabilities.
The Process:
As a class, brainstorm measurements and tests on eggs that may provide relevant parameters for the design of an EPV. These parameters may include the average dimensions of a grade A egg, relative resistance to impact at specific angles and others identified by the class. A division into egg-sperimental teams will be made to plan and perform the egg-speriments and log the various data. The results will be posted for sharing among all design teams.
Test Specifications:
CPT: Controlled Parametric Testing will be comprised of free-fall trips to the bare floor from increasing altitudes of 1 meter, 2 meters and the classrooms ceiling. A clean release will be made at the designers’ prescribed angle and zero initial velocity.
ACT: Adverse Conditions Testing will be comprised of free-fall trips to the bare floor from the classroom’s ceiling. Adverse conditions may include, but are not limited to, the following: deviation from the prescribed release angle, non-zero initial vertical or rotational velocity, simulated aging of EPV structure.
